Sod vs Hydroseed
Differences, Cost, & How to Choose
Superior Lawn Care in Southern Vermont
So you have recently tore up your backyard to put in a pool or had some large trees removed and are ready to get your lawn looking nice again. Is hydroseeding or sod a better product to install? While both are great options for establishing your lawn and getting thicker, greener grass, there are several essential differences between the two that you should understand before making a decision.
Price — Cost of material and installation is less expensive with hydroseeding than sodding.
Speed of Results — With sod, your lawn looks great immediately, while with hydroseeding it may take a few weeks before you have a nice coating of grass.
Customizability — Hydroseeding gives you more choices for the type of grass used, since it’s growing from seed instead of being already rooted.
Growth Consistency — The steady and consistent growth of hydroseeding (vs. sod’s relocation) helps create deep, strong roots for long-term plant-health.
Weeds — Sod leads to fewer weeds because it is grown in a controlled environment and has already matured.
Erosion Control — The developed root system of sod also contributes to instant erosion control value, however, hydroseeding is more effective in the long-term (starting after a few weeks) for erosion control.

Cost of Hydroseeding vs. Sod
he average cost of hydroseeding for a typical 5,000 to 10,000 square foot lawn is $1,000. Depending on the size of your yard, it could cost anywhere between $500 and $4,000. If the job is smaller than 500 square feet or so, the job will usually be charged at an hourly rate instead. However, we prefer to charge by square foot for the greatest accuracy.
Compared to sod, hydroseeding is about ⅓ the cost. The average pallet of sod costs homeowners about $300, with the total price for a yard of 8,712 square feet (⅕ an acre) being between $3,000 and $8,000. Labor costs are also more expensive with sod.

Care for Your Newly Hydroseeded Lawn
Getting the best out of your lawn starts with knowing what to look for. Issues can be caused by pests, weeds, unusual weather, pre-existing soil conditions, and more. Many of these issues can be addressed by keeping track of fertilization schedules, testing your soil, monitoring rain levels (staying aware of drought or excess rain conditions and the risks involved in each), etc.
You can keep your lawn healthy the easy way with ongoing landscape maintenance services from Wise Oak.

Which Is Better — Hydroseed or Sod?
The appropriate lawn establishment method comes down to what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for immediate results, sod is the way to go. If you are willing to wait about a month for the grass to establish itself at a significantly lower cost, hydroseeding is recommended.
